History and background of the F-5E/N Tiger II aircraft:
The Northrop F-5 is a family of supersonic light fighters that were designed as a privately funded project by Northrop Corporation in the late 1950s. We distinguish two main models: the original F-5A and F-5B Freedom Fighter variants and the significantly updated F-5E and F-5F Tiger II variants. The designers created a small, highly aerodynamic fighter around two compact and high-performance General Electric J85 engines, focusing on efficiency and low maintenance costs. Smaller and simpler than contemporary aircraft such as the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, the F-5 was cheaper to purchase and operate, making it a popular export aircraft.
The F-5E Tiger II, introduced in 1972 after winning the International Fighter Competition, was the second generation of this aircraft. Improvements included more powerful engines, increased fuel capacity, larger wing area, and enhanced leading-edge extensions for better maneuverability. This aircraft was primarily used by American allies and remains in service with the USA for training support exercises. The F-5E Tiger II served in various roles, capable of performing both air and ground missions; this type was widely used during the Vietnam War. A total of 1,400 Tiger II units were produced before production ended in 1987.
The F-5 was also developed as a dedicated reconnaissance aircraft, the RF-5 Tigereye. It served as a starting point for a series of design studies that resulted in the Northrop YF-17 and the naval fighter F/A-18. The Northrop F-20 Tigershark was an advanced variant intended to replace the F-5E, which was ultimately canceled due to a lack of export customers.
