History and background:
The AIDC F-CK-1 Ching-Kuo is a Taiwanese fighter jet designed and produced by the Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) with the help of American companies. This aircraft is part of the Republic of China Air Force and plays a key role in Taiwan's air defense.
After the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949, some Kuomintang forces, including the air force, found refuge in Taiwan. In the face of tense relations with communist China, Taiwan had to maintain its air force in a high state of combat readiness. In the 1970s, faced with aging equipment, Taiwan decided to build its own fighter jet, leading to the Indigenous Defence Fighter (IDF) program.
The decision to build a new fighter jet was made in 1982, and the project was named An Hsiang (Safe Flight). Collaboration with American companies, such as General Dynamics, allowed for the creation of a design similar to the F-16. In 1988, the aircraft was named Ching-Kuo, in honor of the President of the Republic of China. The first prototype took to the air in 1989, and serial production began in the 1990s.
In 2001, a modernization program for the aircraft was initiated, which included new avionics, structural reinforcement, and expanded combat capabilities. Thanks to these changes, the F-CK-1 Ching-Kuo became an even more effective tool for air defense.
Ching-Kuo is a twin-engine mid-wing aircraft with a metal structure, powered by ITEC Garrett/AIDAC TFE1042-70 turbofan engines. The aircraft is equipped with advanced navigation and radar systems, making it a versatile fighter capable of performing various combat missions.
