Historical background: The Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat was one of the main carrier fighters used by the United States Navy and the Royal Navy during World War II. Known for its durability and ability to operate from aircraft carriers, the Wildcat participated in many key naval battles in 1942-43. The F4F-4 version, equipped with folding wings, allowed for an increased number of aircraft on escort carriers, which was crucial in operations in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean Seas.

During Operation Torch in November 1942, Wildcats stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger and three escort carriers (USS Suwanee, Sangamon, and Santee), as well as British Martlets from the aircraft carriers HMS Formidable and Victorious, supported the landing of Allied forces in North Africa. These aircraft bore distinctive yellow outlines around the American stars on the fuselage and wings, aimed at quick identification against Vichy French aircraft and neutralizing French hostility towards the British.

After the conclusion of Operation Torch, American escort carriers with Wildcats transitioned to new tasks in the Pacific, supporting operations in the Solomon Islands, including the battles for Guadalcanal. The yellow markings from Operation Torch were then painted over with camouflage color, which can be seen in photographs as a fresh outline around the stars. British aircraft were quickly repainted to standard British markings from that period after Operation Torch.

The F4F Wildcat was the first American Navy monoplane fighter, replacing the biplane Grumman F3F fighters on aircraft carriers. Introduced into service in carrier squadrons on November 26, 1940, it participated in all battles in the Pacific, from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor to the end of the campaign in the Solomon Islands in early 1943. Initially, the F4F-3 model was in service with Navy and Marine squadrons, and from November 1941, the F4F-4 model with folding wings and enhanced armament was gradually introduced onto aircraft carriers.

Wildcats continued to serve on escort carriers, combating German U-boats. In fighter squadrons aboard these classes of ships, they also conducted support operations during American landings on Pacific islands until the end of the war.
