History and characteristics of the F9F-8 / F9F-8P Cougar:
The Grumman F9F Cougar is a carrier-based jet fighter designed by the American manufacturer Grumman. The development of this aircraft began in the early 1950s when the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps were looking for a modern fighter with swept wings. The Cougar was an evolution of the earlier F9F Panther model, in which the straight wing was replaced with a new swept wing, and a more powerful engine was installed, enhancing its performance.
Service and achievements:
The F9F-8 Cougar entered service in December 1952, but its combat debut occurred after the end of the Korean War. Nevertheless, the aircraft gained recognition as highly maneuverable and easy to fly. In 1954, Cougars set a new transcontinental flight record, covering a distance of 2,438 miles (3,924 km) in less than four hours.
The Blue Angels aerobatic team used various versions of the F9F, including the F9F-8, for air shows before being replaced by the Grumman F11F-1 Tiger. The training version TF-9J (formerly F9F-8T) was the only one that participated in combat operations during the Vietnam War, serving as a fast air control aircraft.
International use:
The Argentine Navy was the only foreign air force to operate the F9F Cougar. Two F9F-8T training aircraft were purchased in 1962 and served until 1971. The Cougar was the first jet to break the sound barrier in Argentina.
