History and development of the FJ-3 "Fury":
The FJ-3 "Fury" is an extension of the earlier FJ-2 model, designed to enhance performance and operational capabilities on aircraft carriers. This aircraft was part of a series of fighters with swept wings, capable of operations from carrier decks, which was crucial for the U.S. Navy and the Marine Corps.
The FJ-3 was equipped with a Wright J65 engine, a licensed version of the British turbojet engine Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire. Thanks to this engine, the FJ-3 gained 28% more thrust compared to its predecessor, significantly improving its performance. Externally, the FJ-3 differed from the FJ-2 mainly by a deeper air intake, necessary to handle a larger airflow.
The FJ-3 "Fury" was the first fighter to land on the new supercarrier USS Forrestal in 1956. Despite issues with the J65 engine, such as lubrication system failures and turbine blade problems, the FJ-3 was more valued by the Navy than its predecessor, the FJ-2. A total of 538 FJ-3 units were built, of which 194 were modified to the FJ-3M version capable of carrying air-to-air missiles.
