History of the aircraft: "Flak Bait" is a B-26B-25-MA that rolled off the assembly line of the Glenn L. Martin Company in Middle River on April 26, 1943. By the end of May of the same year, the aircraft and its crew arrived in England, where it was assigned to the 449th Bomb Squadron of the 322nd Bomb Group. During combat missions, American bombers often had to face German anti-aircraft artillery, known as Flak. The aircraft "Flak Bait" got its name from Lieutenant Farrell, who referred to his family's dog, known for attracting fleas, which humorously related to the numerous hits the aircraft received during missions.
Despite numerous damages, including the replacement of all control surfaces and damage to hydraulic and electrical systems, "Flak Bait" managed to return from missions even with one functioning engine. This aircraft completed 206 combat missions, making it a record holder among American aircraft from World War II.
This model is an excellent opportunity to recreate the history of this extraordinary aircraft and its crew. With high-quality parts and detailed instructions, modelers can accurately replicate the details of the historical bomber. The model can be painted using a dedicated set of acrylic paints, allowing for an authentic appearance of the aircraft from its service time.
This model is not only a challenge for experienced modelers but also an excellent history lesson that brings closer the dramatic fates of bomber crews during World War II.
