The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 is a German single-engine fighter designed by Kurt Tank in the late 1930s. This aircraft became one of the cornerstones of the Jagdwaffe (Fighter Forces) of the Luftwaffe, alongside the equally famous Messerschmitt Bf 109. Thanks to its BMW 801 radial engine, the Fw 190 could carry larger payloads than the Bf 109, allowing it to be used as a daytime fighter, fighter-bomber, ground-attack aircraft, and to a lesser extent as a night fighter.

The Fw 190A began its operational service over France in August 1941 and quickly proved to be superior to the Spitfire Mk. V, the main frontline fighter of the Royal Air Force (RAF), especially at low and medium altitudes. The advantage of the Fw 190 persisted until the introduction of the improved Spitfire Mk. IX. In November/December 1942, the Fw 190 made its combat debut on the Eastern Front, achieving many successes in fighter wings and specialized ground-attack units (Schlachtgeschwader).

However, the Fw 190A series had limited performance at high altitudes, which reduced its effectiveness as a high-altitude interceptor. From the very beginning, there were attempts to solve this problem by using a turbocharger in the B model, as well as in the C and D models, which had longer noses and different engines. Ultimately, only the D model entered service in September 1944. These developments led to the creation of the Focke-Wulf Ta 152, which was capable of achieving extreme speeds at medium and high altitudes. Although these "long-nose" variants of the 190 and the derivative Ta 152 provided the Germans with a balance against Allied opponents, they appeared too late to influence the outcome of the war.

The Fw 190 was highly regarded by its pilots. Some of the most effective Luftwaffe fighter aces, such as Otto Kittel, Walter Nowotny, and Erich Rudorffer, achieved many of their victories flying this aircraft. The Fw 190 had greater firepower than the Bf 109 and, according to German pilots who flew both fighters, better maneuverability at low and medium altitudes. It is considered one of the best fighters of World War II.
