The Fokker Dr.I became a legendary aircraft thanks to Manfred von Richthofen, known as the "Red Baron," who achieved his last 17 victories in it before being killed on April 21, 1918. This aircraft was also successfully piloted by other German aces, such as Josef Jacobs, who scored 30 confirmed victories on this type.
Design and development: The Fokker Dr.I was designed by Reinhold Platz at the request of Anthony Fokker, who was inspired by the British Sopwith Triplane. The first prototypes, designated as F.I, were sent to combat units for evaluation, and their successes led to the serial production of the Dr.I. This aircraft was distinguished by its exceptional maneuverability, making it a formidable opponent in aerial combat, despite being slower than Allied fighters.
Operational history: The Fokker Dr.I was primarily used by fighter squadrons Jagdgeschwader I, II, and III. Despite its agility, the aircraft had issues with wing construction, which led to several accidents. After improvements were made, the Dr.I returned to service, but its production ended in May 1918 when a more modern Fokker D.VII appeared on the front.
