History and significance of the La Fayette frigate:
The La Fayette frigate, whose construction began on December 15, 1990, entered service on December 15, 1995, as the first of a series of five ships. In addition to F710 La Fayette, this series also includes F711 Surcouf, F712 Courbet, F713 Aconit, and F714 Guepratte. These frontline warships were primarily designed to protect state interests in distant maritime areas and to resolve crises outside Europe. They can also support rapid response forces, protect commercial traffic, and carry out special operations and humanitarian missions.
The La Fayette class is a class of general-purpose frigates built by DCNS in the 1980s and 1990s. In addition to the French Navy, these ships are also used by the navies of Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Taiwan.
These frigates were originally known as "stealth frigates" due to their unique design, which was innovative at the time. Reduced radar cross-section was achieved through a clean superstructure compared to conventional designs, sloped sides, and radar-absorbing materials that are a composite of wood and fiberglass, as hard as steel, lightweight, and fire-resistant. Most modern combat ships built after the introduction of the La Fayette class apply the same stealth principles.
All information collected by onboard sensors is managed by the Information Processing System, the electronic brain of the ship's operations center, supplemented by an electronic command support system.
These frigates are designed to operate a 10-ton helicopter from the Panther or NH90 series, although they are also capable of operating heavy helicopters such as the Super Frelon. These helicopters can carry AM39 or AS15 anti-ship missiles and can be launched in sea state five or six thanks to the Samahe helicopter handling system.
