History and characteristics of the H39 Hotchkiss tank:

The H39 Hotchkiss light tank, officially designated as Char léger modèle 1935 H modifie 1939, was an evolution of the earlier H35 model. It was equipped with a more powerful engine with an output of 120 HP, allowing for higher speeds. This tank was distinguished by its raised engine compartment at the rear of the hull, which was one of its visual characteristics.

The H39 was armed with a Puteaux SA38 37 mm gun with a longer L/33 barrel, mounted in a modified APX-R1 turret. This enhanced the tank's combat effectiveness. At the outbreak of World War II, H39 tanks were widely used by the French army, and after France's defeat, many of them were captured by the Germans and used under the designation PzKpfw. 38H 735(f).

Combat use:

During the French campaign in 1940, H39 tanks were used by both infantry and cavalry. In the infantry, they served in 8 tank battalions, while in the cavalry, they were part of various subunits. After the Germans occupied France, about 600 H35/39 tanks were captured and, after modifications, incorporated into German armament. The Germans mainly used them for training, occupation, and anti-partisan purposes, although some units fought on the Eastern Front and in Yugoslavia. After the war, H39 tanks also found their way into the arsenal of the Israeli army, where they were used for a short time in the early period of the state of Israel's existence.
