History and background:

The Hotchkiss H38/39 tank is an evolution of the earlier H35 model, which was designed in response to the needs of the French army in the 1930s. Initially, this tank was intended to support infantry, replacing the outdated Renault FT tanks. In 1935, Hotchkiss presented a prototype that, after modifications, was adopted into service as Char leger modele 1935 H.

The H38/39 model differed from its predecessor with a more powerful engine of 120 HP, allowing for greater speeds. The H39 version was armed with a longer SA38 37 mm gun, which increased its combat effectiveness. At the outbreak of World War II, these tanks were widely used by the French army, and after France's defeat, many of them were captured by the Germans and used in various roles, including for training and occupation purposes.
