Historical background: Opel Blitz, which means "lightning" in German, is the name given to various light and medium trucks produced by the German car manufacturer Opel from 1930 to 1975. The logo of this truck, resembling a lightning symbol, is still present in the current Opel logo. Blitz became one of the most important transport vehicles of the Wehrmacht, used for transporting soldiers, supply deliveries, and as mobile field workshops.
In the years leading up to World War II, Opel was the largest truck manufacturer in Germany. In 1935, as part of the German armaments program, the Opelwerk Brandenburg plant was built, where over 130,000 Blitz trucks and chassis were produced by 1944. The Blitz 3.6 version, with a payload of three tons, was widely used by the German armed forces from 1939. Variants included an extended version and a four-wheel drive version, Blitz A.
The production of Blitz trucks was halted in 1944 after the Opelwerk Brandenburg plant was destroyed in a RAF air raid. By the end of the war, about 2,500 Blitz 3.6 trucks were produced at the Daimler-Benz plants in Mannheim. After the war, production resumed in Russelsheim, and the last units were assembled in 1954.
