Historical background: Opel Blitz, which in German means "lightning," is the name given to various light and medium-duty trucks produced by the German car manufacturer Opel from 1930 to 1975. The logo of this truck, featuring two stripes arranged in the shape of a lightning symbol, is still present in the current Opel logo.

In the years leading up to World War II, Opel was the largest truck manufacturer in Germany. The name Blitz was first used in 1930. As part of the German war economy and armament efforts, authorities commissioned the construction of the Opelwerk Brandenburg plant in 1935, and by 1944, over 130,000 Blitz trucks and chassis had been produced. From 1939, the Blitz 3.6 version with a three-ton payload was widely used by the German armed forces (Wehrmacht) during World War II. Variants included an extended version and the four-wheel drive Blitz A.

After the war, the Brandenburg plant was completely dismantled at the order of the Soviet military administration, while Daimler-Benz in Mannheim resumed production of the Blitz 3.6 under the name L 701 until 1949. The last 467 medium trucks were reassembled by Opel in Rüsselsheim by 1954, when production was finally ended without a successor.
