History and usage: The 7.5 cm Pak 40 gun was developed between 1939 and 1941 by the Krupp and Rheinmetall factories. Initially, the project did not have a high priority, but after the invasion of the USSR and encounters with T-34 and KW-1 tanks, work on the gun accelerated. Introduced to combat units in late 1941, it quickly became the standard anti-tank gun of the Wehrmacht. It was used not only by Germany but also by other Axis countries, and captured specimens were used by the Red Army.
The Pak 40 gun was known for its effectiveness against Allied tanks, except for the heaviest armored models such as the IS-2 or M26 Pershing. Its only serious drawback was its significant weight, which required the use of an artillery tractor for transport, especially on soft ground. After the war, the Pak 40 gun was used in the armies of many countries, including Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Finland, Romania, and Hungary.
Technical specifications of the gun:
- Caliber: 75 mm
- Weight: 1425 kg (combat)
- Muzzle velocity: 930 m/s (sub-caliber)
- Rate of fire: 14 rounds/min
- Range: 1800 m (direct fire), 7680 m (indirect fire)
- Elevation angle: from -5° to +22°
