History and historical background:
The AMR 35 was a French light tank developed during the interwar period. Although its name suggests a reconnaissance function, it was actually a light combat vehicle that served as support for mechanized infantry. The AMR 35 project was initiated in 1933 as an improvement over the earlier AMR 33 model, with the engine moved from the front to the rear of the vehicle. In 1934, a stronger suspension was introduced, and the AMR 35 replaced the AMR 33 on production lines.
During the Battle of France in 1940, most AMR 35s were lost in the first weeks of fighting. The Germans captured some of the vehicles and used them as Panzerspahwagen ZT 702 (f). Some of them, including newly produced ZT4, were equipped with an 8 cm mortar schwerer Granatwerfer 34/1 in an open superstructure, creating a self-propelled 81 mm mortar. These vehicles were mainly used by occupation forces in France, as well as by Panzerkampfwagen-Kompanie 539 in Prague.
