Scharnhorst was one of the most important ships of the Kriegsmarine, the German Navy, and played a significant role in naval operations during the conflict.

Ship history: Scharnhorst was the lead ship of its class, which also included its sister ship Gneisenau. The construction of Scharnhorst began at the Kriegsmarinewerft shipyard in Wilhelmshaven on June 15, 1935, and it was launched on October 3, 1936. It was ultimately completed in January 1939. The ship was armed with nine 28 cm (11 inch) C/34 guns arranged in three triple turrets. There were plans to replace them with six 38 cm (15 inch) SK C/34 guns in twin turrets, but these plans were never realized.

During World War II, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau often operated together, conducting raids on British merchant ships in the Atlantic. In November 1939, during its first operation, Scharnhorst sank the armed merchant cruiser HMS Rawalpindi. In April 1940, both ships participated in Operation Weserübung, the German invasion of Norway. During operations off the coast of Norway, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau engaged the British battlecruiser HMS Renown and sank the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious along with its escorting destroyers Acasta and Ardent. In this engagement, Scharnhorst achieved one of the longest artillery hits in naval history.

In early 1942, after British bombing raids, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau conducted the so-called "Channel Dash," moving through the English Channel from occupied France to Germany. In early 1943, Scharnhorst joined the battleship Tirpitz in Norway to counter Allied convoys heading to the Soviet Union. During one such operation, on December 26, 1943, in the Battle of North Cape, Scharnhorst was sunk by the British battleship HMS Duke of York and its escort. Of the entire crew of 1,968 men, only 36 sailors survived.
