Historical background: Opel Blitz, which means "lightning" in German, is the name given to various light and medium trucks produced by the German car manufacturer Opel from 1930 to 1975. The name Blitz was later applied to the British Bedford CF when it replaced the Blitz in some markets.
In the years leading up to World War II, Opel was the largest truck manufacturer in Germany. The name Blitz, conceived in a competition, was first used in November 1930. As part of the Nazi economy and German armament efforts, authorities commissioned the construction of the Opelwerk Brandenburg plant in 1935, and by 1944, over 130,000 Blitz trucks and chassis had been produced.
From 1939, the Blitz 3.6 version with a payload of three tons was used in large numbers by the German armed forces (Wehrmacht) during World War II. Variants included an extended version and the four-wheel drive Blitz A. To cope with difficult road conditions and muddy seasons on the Eastern Front, a half-track version Maultier ("mule") Sd.Kfz. 3 was built, utilizing tracks and suspension from Panzer I tanks.
