The 15 cm sIG 33 is a German heavy infantry gun that played a key role in military operations during World War II. It was designed in the 1920s by Rheinmetall as a complement to the lighter 7.5 cm leIG 18 gun. Adopted into service in 1933, the sIG 33 was the world's first infantry gun of such a large caliber, which provided German infantry regiments with a significant advantage in direct-fire artillery.
History and use:
-
Production and development: The production of the sIG 33 began in the 1930s, and the guns were produced not only by Rheinmetall but also by AEG and the Czech company Böhmische Waffenfabrik in Strakonice. The version adapted for motor traction differed in wheels and was slightly heavier than the horse-drawn version.
-
Combat use: In 1939, the German army had 450 sIG 33 guns, which were used in 51 divisions of the first and second waves of mobilization. These guns were an integral part of the infantry gun companies in regiments, with a total of six in each division. As the war progressed, the sIG 33 was also introduced into motorized and armored divisions. By the end of 1944, the German army still had 1183 guns of this type.
-
Adaptations: The sIG 33 was also mounted on various tank chassis, creating self-propelled guns. Initially, the chassis of the PzKpfw I tank was used, but due to the instability of the design, heavier chassis such as the PzKpfw II and PzKpfw III were later utilized. The version on the PzKpfw IV chassis, known as Sturmpanzer IV, used a modified version of this gun. Other vehicles armed with the sIG 33 include the Grille and the 15 cm sIG 33/2 SF auf Jagdpanzer 38(t).
