Plastic model kit: German Heavy Halftrack L4500R Maultier 1:35 Zvezda 3603
At the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, most of the Wehrmacht's vehicles were trucks produced under an urgent truck production program (Schnell Program).
Their off-road capability was quite satisfactory for the Western European theater of operations with its extensive highway network, but in the harsh climatic conditions of Russia, with almost no
paved roads, thousands of vehicles got stuck in mud and snow and were abandoned during the first military winter.
Even the Mercedes-Benz L4500A with all-wheel drive was unable to transport cargo in Russian off-road conditions.
Therefore, in 1943, a half-track off-road vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz L 4500R Maultier, was developed based on it.
For this purpose, instead of the rear drive axle, a tracked drive unit from the light tank Pz.Kpfw. II was installed. The vehicle's own weight increased, the payload dropped to 4.5 tons, the maximum speed decreased to 36 km/h, and fuel consumption reached as much as 200 liters per 100 km, but the Maultier was able to traverse any dirt.
The L4500R was produced until 1944, when 1486 units of these machines were built.
