The Tiger II, also known as the Konigstiger, was a German heavy tank used during World War II. It was the successor to the Tiger I tank and combined its thick armor with the sloped armor used in the medium tank Panther. It was the most expensive German tank to produce at that time, weighing nearly 70 tons and protected by armor ranging from 100 to 185 mm at the front. It was armed with a long-barreled 8.8 cm KwK 43 anti-tank gun, making it an extremely formidable opponent on the battlefield.
The Tiger II was first used in combat by the 503rd Heavy Tank Battalion during the Allied invasion of Normandy on July 11, 1944. On the Eastern Front, the first unit equipped with the Tiger II was the 501st Heavy Tank Battalion. Due to intense Allied bombing, only 492 units of this tank were produced.
By the end of the war, the Tiger II participated in the offensive along the Vistula and Oder rivers, the offensive in East Prussia, the offensive at Lake Balaton in Hungary, the Battle of Seelow Heights, and the Battle of Berlin. Despite its power, many of these tanks were abandoned and destroyed by their own crews due to mechanical failures or lack of fuel.
