Vehicle history: The Mercedes-Benz G4 (W31) is a German three-axle off-road vehicle that was first produced by Daimler-Benz in 1934. This car was designed as a command vehicle for the Wehrmacht, but its high price and complex construction made it unsuitable for mass production. Between 1934 and 1939, only 72 units were produced, which were mainly used by the highest state and military authorities of Germany. G4 cars were used by Adolf Hitler and his staff during parades and inspections, including during the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland.
The G4 was an evolution of the G1 model from 1926. Equipped with an 8-cylinder engine with a displacement of 5018 cm3, it generated 100 HP, while later versions reached 110 HP. The car had a 6×4 configuration with four-wheel drive, making it suitable for off-road driving. Nevertheless, its maximum speed was only 67 km/h, which was limited by the type of off-road tires.
Today, there are only a few original G4 units left, which are preserved in museums and private collections around the world. One of the G4 units, used during the annexation of Czechoslovakia and Austria, is currently on display at the Sinsheim Auto and Technik Museum. Another unit, a gift from Hitler to Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, is in the collection of the Spanish Royal Guard. After the war, one of the G4 cars was found by Paramount Pictures and used in Hollywood, including in the series "Hogan's Heroes".
