History and significance of the Pz.Kpfw. IV: The Panzerkampfwagen IV, commonly known as the Panzer IV, was a German medium tank developed in the late 1930s. Initially designed as an infantry support tank, it quickly became the main battle tank of the Wehrmacht, especially after encountering Soviet T-34s, which forced a change in its role. The Panzer IV was the most widely produced German tank during World War II, with a total production of 8,553 units.
