History:
The German U-IXB submarines were an evolution of the earlier IXA type, designed for increased range and greater displacement. Built between 1938 and 1940, these submarines were intended for oceanic operations and became some of the most effective submarines of the Kriegsmarine. A total of 14 submarines of this type were built, each of which could boast sinking an average of over 100,000 gross registered tons (GRT) during its service.
The U-IXB submarines were stationed in various ports depending on the period of the war. Before the fall of France, they were based in Wilhelmshaven, and after the capture of French ports such as Lorient, they were relocated there. Their design and armament allowed for prolonged operations at sea, making them a formidable opponent for Allied convoys.
