History and background: Type II submarines, including Type IIB, were the first units of this class built in Germany after the end of World War I. They were a response to the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, which prohibited Germany from having a submarine fleet. To circumvent these restrictions, Germany established a front company in the Netherlands, NV Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw Den Haag, which designed the prototype CV-707, later built in Finland.
Type IIB was an extension of Type IIA, with an elongated hull and additional fuel tanks, which increased its range to 1800 nautical miles at a speed of 12 knots. These submarines were known for their ability to dive quickly and operate in shallow waters, making them ideal for coastal operations.
At the outbreak of World War II, Type II submarines were extensively used as mine layers in ports and river mouths on the eastern coast of England and Scotland, as well as for combat against shipping in the English Channel. From the spring of 1941, their main role became training new officers of the German Navy in the Baltic Sea. Although Type IIB submarines were relatively small and had limited range, their design allowed for quick diving and operation in difficult conditions. They were also less visible due to their low conning tower, which enhanced their capabilities for covert operations.
