History and characteristics of the SMS Kronprinz battleship:
SMS Kronprinz, later renamed Kronprinz Wilhelm, was the last of the four König-class battleships. It was built at the Germaniawerft shipyard in Kiel, and its launching took place on February 21, 1914. It officially entered service on November 8, 1914, just a few months after the outbreak of World War I. The name "Kronprinz" refers to the German crown prince, Prince Wilhelm, and in June 1918, the battleship was renamed in his honor.
The König-class battleships were a response to the British Orion-class battleships and represented the fourth generation of German dreadnoughts. SMS Kronprinz was armed with ten 30.5 cm guns arranged in five twin gun turrets. It achieved a maximum speed of 21 knots (39 km/h) thanks to three Parsons steam turbines powered by three oil-fired boilers and twelve coal-fired boilers.
Service and operations:
SMS Kronprinz participated in many fleet operations during World War I, including the famous Battle of Jutland (May 31 - June 1, 1916), where despite intense combat actions, it emerged from the battle unscathed. In November 1916, it was torpedoed by the British submarine HMS J1, but after repairs, it continued its service, participating in operations such as Albion in October 1917, where it forced the Russian battleship Tsesarevich to retreat.
After the war ended, in November 1918, SMS Kronprinz Wilhelm was interned at Scapa Flow, where on June 21, 1919, on the orders of Admiral Ludwig von Reuter, it was scuttled to avoid capture by the British. The wreck of the battleship, like its sister ships, was not raised and still rests on the bottom of the bay, becoming a popular diving site.
