History and achievements of the Hawker Tempest V:

The Hawker Tempest V, initially known as Typhoon II, was designed as an improved version of the Hawker Typhoon. The main goal was to enhance performance at high altitudes by using a thinner wing with a laminar profile. Due to significant differences in construction, the aircraft was renamed Tempest. It was one of the most powerful fighters of World War II, and at low altitudes, it was the fastest single-engine propeller aircraft of that time.

The Tempest V entered service in 1944 and quickly became a key element in low-altitude interception operations, particularly in the fight against V-1 flying bombs. This aircraft also supported major invasions, such as Operation Market Garden, and effectively attacked railway infrastructure in Germany and Luftwaffe aircraft on the ground. The Tempest V was also effective against newly developed jet aircraft, such as the Messerschmitt Me 262.

Design features of the Tempest V:

The first production series of the Tempest V, designated "Series I," was equipped with long-barreled Hispano Mk.II cannons that protruded in front of the leading edge of the wings. In later series, "Series 2," shorter Hispano Mk.V cannons were used, whose barrels were aligned with the leading edge. The Tempest V could carry up to 2000 pounds (approximately 910 kg) of external armament under the wings, including bombs and rockets, although the latter were not used operationally during the war.

In mid-1944, additional improvements were introduced, such as the Rebecca transponder and a static port for more accurate altitude measurement. Although the Tempest V was the best RAF fighter at low and medium altitudes, it was not equipped with the modern Mk.IIC gyroscopic sight, which could have significantly increased its combat effectiveness.
