History and significance of the Heinkel He 111: The Heinkel He 111 was designed by Siegfried and Walter Günter at Heinkel Flugzeugwerke in 1934. Initially presented as a civilian passenger aircraft, it was actually designed from the outset as a bomber for the Luftwaffe. With its distinctive glazed nose, the He 111 became one of the most recognizable German bombers of World War II.
The H-3 variant, which can be built from this kit, was produced from November 1939 and was equipped with Jumo 211D-1 engines with increased power and reinforced armament. In 1940, 504 units of this model were produced, some of which were delivered to the Romanian Air Force.
The He 111 was used on many fronts of the European theater of war. During the Battle of Britain, it served as a strategic bomber, and later it was used as a torpedo bomber in the Atlantic and Arctic, as well as a transport aircraft and medium-range bomber on the western, eastern, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and North African fronts.
The He 111H-3 was equipped with Junkers Jumo 211D-1 engines with a power of 895 kW (1200 HP). Its armament typically included three MG 15 machine guns of 7.92 mm caliber and the capability to carry bombs with a total weight of up to 2000 kg. Throughout the war, the aircraft was modified multiple times, which allowed for an increase in its combat capabilities.
The Romanian Air Force used the He 111H-3 in operations on the Eastern Front, including during the campaign in Bessarabia in 1941 and in later actions in Russia in 1942. These aircraft were part of the 5th Bomber Group, which played a significant role in military operations in these areas.
