History and significance of He 111H-6: The Heinkel He 111 was designed by Siegfried and Walter Günter in 1934 as a passenger aircraft, but from the beginning, it was intended to serve as a heavy bomber for the Luftwaffe. The H-6 version, produced from May 1941, was the most widely produced variant of this bomber. Equipped with Jumo 211F-2 engines with increased power and VS 11 wooden propellers, this version could carry up to 1800 kg of bombs or two LT F5b torpedoes.
The He 111H-6 was used on all fronts as a level bomber, torpedo bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, transport aircraft, and for laying mines. Its distinctive, glazed "greenhouse" nose made it one of the most recognizable German bombers during World War II. Although it initially performed well, during the Battle of Britain, its defensive armament proved insufficient against fighters.
Production of the He 111 ended in September 1944, when the Luftwaffe focused on the production of fighters. After the war, production of the He 111 continued in Spain as CASA 2.111, where these aircraft were used until 1973.
