The Heinkel He 162 Volksjager (People's Fighter), also known by the codename Salamander, was one of the most unusual aviation projects of the Third Reich. Designed in record time as part of the Jagernotprogramm (Emergency Fighter Program), it was intended to be a cheap and easy-to-fly jet fighter capable of stopping Allied bombing raids. The design was characterized by a BMW 003 turbojet engine placed on the top of the fuselage and extensive use of wood in the construction of the wings and tail, which resulted from the shortage of strategic metals at the end of the war.
