History of the aircraft: The Heinkel He 111, designed by Siegfried and Walter Gunter in 1934, initially masqueraded as a civilian passenger aircraft, but from the very beginning, it was intended for service as a heavy bomber for the Luftwaffe. With its distinctive glazed nose and large elliptical wings, the He 111 became one of the most recognizable bombers of World War II. The H-6 version was the most widely produced variant of this bomber, serving in various roles such as bombing, torpedoing, mine laying, and reconnaissance.
The He 111 was used on all fronts of the European theater of war, from strategic bombings during the Battle of Britain to torpedo operations in the Atlantic and Arctic. Despite numerous upgrades, by the end of the war, it had become outdated; however, due to the lack of an effective successor, it was used until the end of the conflict. Production of the He 111 ended in September 1944, when the production of piston bombers was largely halted in favor of fighters.
After the war, production of the Heinkel continued in Spain as CASA 2.111, where these aircraft were equipped with Rolls-Royce Merlin engines and remained in service until 1973.
The He 111 featured innovative design solutions, such as a fully glazed cockpit, an asymmetrical nose, and the absence of a floor in the cockpit, which provided excellent visibility. The aircraft also had advanced control systems, and its defensive armament included numerous machine gun positions, providing a wide field of fire.
