History of HMS Duke of York: HMS Duke of York was one of five battleships of the King George V class, which were key units of the British fleet during World War II. After entering service, the battleship quickly found itself at the center of military operations. In December 1941, just a month after officially entering service, Duke of York transported British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to the United States for a meeting with President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

In 1942, the battleship served as an escort for convoys, including as the flagship of the heavy escort for convoy PQ-17. In October of the same year, it was sent to Gibraltar, where it became the flagship of Force H. It participated in the invasion of North Africa, although its role was mainly limited to protecting accompanying aircraft carriers.

One of the most significant moments in the history of HMS Duke of York was the Battle of North Cape on December 26, 1943. The battleship engaged in a clash with the German battleship Scharnhorst. During this battle, Duke of York inflicted serious damage on the enemy, contributing to the sinking of Scharnhorst after a ten-hour fight.

In 1945, HMS Duke of York was assigned to the British Pacific Fleet as the flagship; however, it arrived too late to participate in combat operations before Japan's surrender. After the war, the battleship remained in service until November 1951, and in 1957 it was scrapped.
