History of HMS Victorious: HMS Victorious was commissioned into the Home Fleet in May 1941. Just nine days after entering service, pilots from its deck attacked the German battleship Bismarck. On May 26, 1941, despite a lack of experience, the aircraft carrier's crew managed to hit Bismarck's midship with a torpedo, causing damage to the fuel tank. After the sinking of Bismarck, HMS Victorious continued operations with the Home Fleet, and its Fairey Albacore aircraft participated in the attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in March 1942.
In May and June 1942, HMS Victorious provided cover for the Russian convoys PQ-15 and PQ-17. It then participated in Operation Pedestal, and by the end of 1942, took part in landings in North Africa. In 1943, the aircraft carrier went to Pearl Harbor to join the USS Saratoga task force, Task Force 14. In the southwestern Pacific region, HMS Victorious supported the American fleet, carrying both British and American Wildcat fighters.
From January to March 1944, HMS Victorious again covered Russian convoys, and then participated in Operation "Tungsten," an air attack on Tirpitz on April 3, 1944. After another refit, it joined the British Eastern Fleet, heading to the Far East. In July 1944, it led an attack on Palembang along with HMS Illustrious, and on July 25, conducted an attack on the Andaman Islands with HMS Indomitable. In October 1944, it was assigned to the British Pacific Fleet, participating in the last fierce operations at the end of the war.
