History and use of the Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw: The Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw, also known as the S-55, is an American multi-role helicopter designed by Sikorsky Aircraft. Its first flight took place on November 10, 1949, and it entered service in 1950. This helicopter was used by all branches of the United States Armed Forces and was also produced under license in several countries, including the United Kingdom as the Westland Whirlwind.
The H-19 was designed as a successor to the aging H-5 Dragonfly model. During the Korean War, it served in transport and rescue roles, and its successes in these operations contributed to its widespread use. Although there were initial attempts to convert it into an attack helicopter, it turned out that its engine was too weak to carry additional armament.
Technical specifications of the Sikorsky H-19:
- Powerplant: Pratt & Whitney R-1340-57 engine with 450 kW
- Maximum speed: 101 mph (163 km/h)
- Ceiling: 10,500 feet (3,200 m)
- Range: 405 miles (720 km)
- Crew: 2 persons
- Capacity: 12 soldiers
- Length: 62.66 feet (19.1 m)
- Rotor diameter: 53 feet (16.2 m)
Applications and achievements: The H-19 Chickasaw was the first true transport helicopter of the U.S. Army, which was crucial for the development of air mobility doctrine. During the Korean War, these helicopters were used for medical evacuation, tactical support, and supply transport to the front lines. In operations such as Windmill I and Haylift II, the H-19 demonstrated reliability and durability, contributing to its popularity among the armed forces.
This helicopter was also used by French armed forces in Algeria and Indochina, as well as by many other countries, including Portugal, Greece, Israel, Chile, South Africa, Denmark, and Turkey. Civilian versions were used for various tasks, including as rescue and transport helicopters.
