History and use of HP.52 Hampden B.Mk.I: The HP.52 Hampden B.Mk.I was designed by Handley Page in response to the British Ministry of Aviation's specification B.9/32, which sought a modern bomber to replace outdated biplanes. The prototype of this aircraft was completed in the spring of 1936, and its first flight took place in June of the same year. The aircraft reached a speed of 426 km/h and could carry over 1800 kg of bombs.
Mass production began in the spring of 1938, and by July 1940, 500 units had been produced. In February 1940, English Electric joined the production, building an additional 770 units by March 1942. These aircraft were actively used from the beginning of World War II, conducting attacks on ground targets, bombing raids, attacks on ships, and mining ports. By the autumn of 1942, they served in Bomber Command and were then transferred to Coastal Command, where many were converted into torpedo bombers.
