About the Hs 123A-1 airplane:
The Hs 123A-1 is a German ground attack aircraft whose serial production began in September 1936. Its main task was to provide air support for ground forces. It was equipped with two synchronized machine guns and bombs with a total weight of up to 450 kg. These aircraft were delivered to air groups for direct infantry support and were widely used by training units.
During World War II, the Hs 123A-1 demonstrated great resilience, participating in the invasion of Poland and later in campaigns in France and the Balkans. Early production models were distinguished by the absence of a canopy behind the pilot's cockpit.
Historical curiosity:
In the summer of 1938, an interesting event occurred involving one of the Hs 123 aircraft. Lieutenant Siegfried Hamann, the adjutant to the commander of 3./Fliegergruppe 50, who had no formal pilot training, secretly learned to fly this aircraft. After confessing this to his commander, he was granted permission to demonstrate his skills. Ground personnel, expressing their doubts about his abilities, painted the aircraft with large, humorous inscriptions. Despite the skepticism, Hamann's flight was a success, confirming his skills and allowing him to become a full-fledged pilot. By 1939, he joined III./St.G2 as a pilot and participated in the attack on Poland.
