History and technical background of Hs 129: The Henschel Hs 129 was designed as a ground attack and close support aircraft for the Luftwaffe. Its development began after the experiences of the Condor Legion in Spain, where German analysts concluded that a specialized aircraft was needed for attacks on ground targets. The Hs 129 V1 prototype, built in 1937, was a sturdy construction with an aluminum fuselage and steel armor plates protecting the engines and cockpit. This aircraft was powered by two Argus AS 410A-0 engines and began testing in May 1939.

The Hs 129B series, which went into production after modifications, was equipped with Gnome-Rhone 14M engines, which improved the aircraft's performance. The standard armament included two 20 mm Mg 151 cannons and two 7.9 mm MG 17 machine guns, with the option to mount a light bomb under the fuselage.
