History and historical background:

The 40.M Turan I tank was developed based on the Czechoslovak design Skoda S-IIC. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Germany, the S-IIC prototypes were modified to the Skoda T-22 version and then handed over to Hungary, where they became the basis for the production of the 40.M Turan I tank. This tank weighed 18 tons and was powered by a Manfred Weiss gasoline engine with an output of 250 HP, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 48 km/h.

The 40.M Turan I was armed with a 40 mm Skoda A-17 anti-tank gun and two 7.92 mm machine guns. Its armor, up to 50 mm thick, provided protection in line with the requirements of 1941. Nevertheless, production was slow, and by 1944 only 285 units had been completed. These tanks were used by the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions and the 1st Cavalry Division of the Hungarian army.

Despite being modern in the early 1940s, the 40.M Turan I quickly became outdated in the face of Soviet T-34/85 and IS-2 tanks. The Hungarian armed forces attempted to modernize the Turan by creating the 41M Turan version with a larger 75 mm gun, but it did not match its Soviet counterparts. The production of Hungarian tanks was ultimately halted in the autumn of 1944.
