History and technical background:
The Hungarian medium tank 41.M Turan II was an evolution of the earlier model Turan I, which in turn was based on the design of the Czech tank Skoda, similar to the German Panzer 38(t). Turan II was designed in response to the need for more advanced armament that could meet the demands of the battlefield during World War II.
The Turan II tank was equipped with a new turret that housed a short-barreled 75 mm M41 gun. These changes were necessary to accommodate the massive loading system and specially armored recoil piston. Despite these improvements, the interior of the turret remained cramped, which was one of the challenges for the crew. To improve working comfort, the designers added new ventilation openings aimed at removing the large amounts of gases produced during firing.
Production of the Turan II began in May 1943, and by 1944 a total of 139 units had been produced. These tanks debuted in combat in April 1944 in Galicia, where they were used by the 1st and 2nd Hungarian Armored Divisions and the 1st Cavalry Division. Unfortunately, in clashes with the Soviet T-34 and IS-2, the Turan II proved to be inferior in terms of armament and armor. Many of these tanks were destroyed or abandoned during the defense of Budapest.
