History and significance of I-16 type 28:
The I-16, designed by N. N. Polikarpov in 1933, was the world's first high-speed fighter and became the most numerous Soviet aircraft in the mid-1930s and early 1940s. It was a monoplane with retractable landing gear, which was a groundbreaking solution at that time.
The I-16 type 18 modification with the M-62 engine entered service in the summer of 1939 and participated in the Soviet-Japanese conflict over the Khalkhin Gol River, and later in the Soviet-Finnish Winter War of 1939-1940. From the end of 1939, versions of the I-16 type 24 with the M-63 engine and the I-16 type 28 with cannon armament were produced.
In the early stages of the Soviet-German war, the I-16 types 18, 24, and 28 were the most widely used aircraft in service and bore the brunt of heavy air combat. The I-16 type 28, due to its armament and performance, played a key role in defending Soviet skies in the early years of the war.
