Historical background:
The Dodge Power Wagon, also known as the Command Car, was a key vehicle in the IDF arsenal since the 1960s. After World War II, the series of Dodge WC trucks was widely used by the Israeli armed forces, but over time they began to wear out. In the 1960s, new vehicles of this class were needed, which led to the introduction of Power Wagons as their successors.
Initially, models with closed cabins were used, mainly acquired from Egypt, but later versions with soft tops were introduced, which were cheaper and simpler to produce. From 1966, these trucks were delivered to Israel as CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits, which were assembled and supplemented with parts produced in the newly established AIL (Automotive Industries Ltd.) factory in Nazareth.
The first combat use of the new Power Wagons occurred during the Six-Day War in 1967, but it was the Yom Kippur War in 1973 that brought them widespread recognition. These vehicles were also used by several foreign armies, including Uganda, Kenya, and the South Lebanon Army.
Although the Power Wagon was a spartan and uncomfortable vehicle, it gained popularity among soldiers due to its durability and reliability. It was used for many tasks, from transport to combat operations.
