Historical background: Yukikaze, which translates to "Snowy Wind," was one of the Kagero class destroyers known for its remarkable durability and luck in battle. It was the only ship of its class to survive the war without significant damage, earning it the nickname "unsinkable ship" and "miracle ship."
Yukikaze participated in many key naval battles, such as the battles in the Java Sea, at Midway, Santa Cruz, and the naval battle at Guadalcanal, where it sank the destroyer USS Laffey and contributed to the sinking of USS Cushing. In the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, Yukikaze emerged unscathed, and in the battle near Kolombangara, it likely torpedoed the light cruiser HMNZS Leander.
During the Battle of the Philippine Sea, Yukikaze performed escort missions, and in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, it survived Allied attacks that sank many Japanese ships. Its last major action took place during Operation Ten-Go, where it escorted the battleship Yamato on a suicide mission to Okinawa. Despite intense air attacks, Yukikaze survived with minimal damage.
Operation Ten-Go: In April 1945, in the face of the impending invasion of Okinawa, the Japanese navy decided to send the battleship Yamato on a mission aimed at destroying Allied landing convoys. Yukikaze was one of nine ships escorting Yamato. During this operation, Yukikaze survived attacks from 386 aircraft from American aircraft carriers, and after Yamato was sunk, it rescued survivors and scuttled damaged escort ships.
Post-war: After the war, Yukikaze was transferred to the Republic of China Navy, where it served as Dan Yang until 1966. During this time, it participated in coastal bombing missions and intercepted merchant ships. It was ultimately scrapped in 1970.
