Historical background: IJN Mikasa is a pre-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Japanese Navy at the end of the 19th century. Named after Mount Mikasa in Nara, Japan, this ship was the only representative of its class. Mikasa served as the flagship of Vice Admiral Togo Heihachiro during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905, including the Battle of Port Arthur and the battles in the Yellow Sea and at Tsushima.
During the Battle of Tsushima, which took place on May 27, 1905, Mikasa led the Japanese fleet into battle against the second and third Pacific squadrons, detached from the Baltic Fleet. The ship opened fire on the Russian battleship Knyaz Suvorov, the flagship of the Russian fleet, contributing to severe damage and chaos in the enemy ranks. Mikasa was subjected to intense fire, but thanks to its solid construction and the crew's skills, it survived the battle with minimal damage.
After the war, Mikasa was damaged due to an ammunition depot explosion, which caused it to sink. However, the ship was salvaged and repaired, and then served as a coastal defense ship during World War I and supported Japanese forces during the Siberian intervention in the Russian Civil War.
In 1922, in accordance with the provisions of the Washington Treaty, Mikasa was decommissioned and converted into a museum ship in Yokosuka. It is the only surviving example of a pre-dreadnought battleship in the world and the only preserved British battleship.
