History of the Ił-10/Avia B-33 aircraft:
The Ił-10, known in NATO code as "Beast," is a Soviet ground attack aircraft developed by the Il'yushin design bureau at the end of World War II. This aircraft was also produced under license in Czechoslovakia as the Avia B-33. The Ił-10 entered service in October 1944, initially in training units of the Soviet Air Force. The first combat unit of the Ił-10 began service in January 1945, but did not participate in combat operations due to incomplete training. Nevertheless, three other Ił-10 units participated in the final combat operations of World War II in Europe.
During the war, the Ił-10 proved to be an effective ground attack aircraft, although it was not without losses. After the war, the Ił-10 became the primary ground attack aircraft of the USSR until the early 1950s. During this time, due to the development of new jet aircraft, the USSR abandoned further development of dedicated ground attack aircraft in favor of multi-role fighter-bombers.
The Ił-10 and its licensed version, the Avia B-33, were widely used by the Warsaw Pact countries. The Polish Air Force used a total of 120 Ił-10 and 281 B-33. In Poland, the B-33 was modified to carry 400-liter fuel tanks under the wings. Czechoslovakia operated 86 Ił-10 and about 600 B-33, while Hungary and Romania also utilized these aircraft in their air forces.
In the 1950s, the Ił-10 was also used by North Korea during the Korean War. Initially, it achieved success against poorly armed South Korean forces, but later suffered heavy losses in clashes with American fighters. The People's Republic of China also employed the Ił-10 in its air force, and these aircraft participated in battles against the nationalist government in Taiwan in 1955.
