Plastic model aircraft kit: Il-2 1:72 Smer 0865
The Il-2 (Ilyushin Il-2) is a legendary Soviet single-engine attack aircraft of mixed construction, which became one of the symbols of victory over the Third Reich. Designed by the Sergey Ilyushin design bureau, it first flew in October 1939. Mass-produced between 1940 and 1945, the machine reached an impressive number of over 36,000 units, making it one of the most widely produced aircraft in aviation history.
The concept of the Il-2 was to create a heavily armored close air support aircraft capable of surviving intense anti-aircraft fire. Key elements, such as the engine and the pilot's cockpit, were protected by an armor shell ranging from 4 to 6 mm thick. Thanks to its resilience and powerful armament, the aircraft earned the nickname "Black Death" from the Germans, while Soviet designers called it the "Flying Tank."
