Historical background:

The Sikh Rifles regiment is part of the Sikh Regiment, which is one of the most decorated regiments in the history of the Indian army. Its origins date back to 1846 when it was formed by the British East India Company following the partial annexation of the Sikh Empire. The modern Sikh Regiment directly descends from the 11th Sikh Regiment of the British army in India.

The Sikh Regiment is renowned for its numerous achievements on the battlefield, earning many awards for bravery both before and after India gained independence. In 1979, the 1st battalion of the regiment was the most decorated battalion of the Commonwealth, with 245 awards before independence and 82 after. Today, the regiment consists of 19 regular infantry battalions and two reserve battalions.

Participation in conflicts:

The Sikhs fought in many conflicts around the world, including the Second Opium War in China, the Second Anglo-Afghan War, on the Western Front, in the Gallipoli and Mesopotamian campaigns during World War I, as well as in the North African, Italian, and Burmese campaigns during World War II. During these operations, they earned numerous awards for valor and honorable distinctions.

During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948, the 1st battalion of the Sikh Regiment was the first unit to be airlifted to Srinagar to support the defense of the Kashmir Valley against Pakistani irregular forces. The Sikh Regiment battalions also participated in the Sino-Indian War in 1962, the Indo-Pakistani Wars in 1965 and 1971, and the Kargil War in 1999.

Recruitment and training:

The Sikh Regiment is a "single-class" regiment, meaning its soldiers are recruited exclusively from Jat Sikhs, while officers come from other Sikh groups. Training takes place at the Sikh Regiment Centre, which is currently located in Ramgarh Cantonment in the state of Jharkhand. The regiment's battle cry, taken from Sikh scriptures, is: "Jo Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal".
