History and historical background: The Nakajima Ki-27, also known by the code name Nate, was the first mass-produced low-wing fighter of the Imperial Japanese Army. Designed by T. Koyama in 1935, this aircraft was characterized by excellent maneuverability, making it a formidable opponent for Soviet fighters I-15bis and I-16 during air battles over China and Mongolia in 1938-1939.
Production of the Ki-27 began in January 1938, and by 1942 a total of 2019 units had been produced. These aircraft were used by the Japanese Air Force until the mid-1940s, as well as by the aviation of Thailand and Manchukuo. In later years, many of them were converted into training aircraft Nakajima Ki-79.
The Ki-27 was powered by a Nakajima Ha-1a radial engine with a power of 650 HP, and its construction was entirely metal. This aircraft was used by the Japanese Air Force in various conflicts, including the war with China and in battles against Soviet forces at Lake Chasan and the Khalkhin Gol River. The Ki-27 was the first Japanese fighter to engage in air combat with Soviet aircraft.
