History and characteristics of JAS-39 Gripen: The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a Swedish lightweight multirole fighter that entered service in the second half of the 1990s. It was designed as a successor to the Saab 35 Draken and 37 Viggen aircraft. The Gripen features a modern aerodynamic layout with a delta-canard configuration, which provides it with excellent maneuverability. The aircraft is equipped with a fly-by-wire control system, which enhances its stability and precision in flight.
The Gripen is capable of reaching a maximum speed of Mach 2.0 and operating from short runways, making it extremely versatile. It can perform fighter, attack, and reconnaissance roles, which is reflected in its name JAS (Jakt – fighter, Attack – attack, Spaning – reconnaissance).
The first flight of the Gripen took place in 1988, and it entered service with the Swedish Air Force in 1996. Thanks to cooperation with international corporations such as BAE Systems, the Gripen has found buyers worldwide, including countries such as the Republic of South Africa, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Thailand, and Brazil.
