History and significance of the Ju 88: The Junkers Ju 88 was one of the most important aircraft of the Luftwaffe during World War II. Designed by the German company Junkers Aircraft and Motor Works, the Ju 88 was a multi-role combat aircraft capable of serving as a bomber, dive bomber, night fighter, torpedo bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, and heavy fighter. In later stages of the war, it was even adapted for use as a flying bomb.
The Ju 88 project began in response to the requirements of the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM) from 1934 for a new multi-role aircraft. The chief designer was Ernst Zindel, who created an aircraft capable of high-speed flight, allowing it to evade interception by enemy fighters. The first prototype took to the air on December 21, 1936, and its performance was so impressive that competing designs, the Henschel Hs 127 and the Messerschmitt Bf 162, were abandoned.
Although the development of the Ju 88 encountered a number of technical problems that delayed its introduction into service, this aircraft played a key role in many military campaigns. The Ju 88 participated in the invasion of Poland, the Norwegian campaign, the Battle of France, the Battle of Britain, the invasion of Yugoslavia and Greece, the Siege of Malta, the North African campaign, and on the Eastern Front.
Production of the Ju 88 continued uninterrupted from 1936 to 1945, with over 15,000 units produced in various variants. It was the most produced German twin-engine aircraft of this period and the second most produced bomber in history, after the four-engine Consolidated B-24 Liberator.
