History and development of KAI FA-50PH Fighting Eagle:
The KAI FA-50PH Fighting Eagle is an advanced variant of the South Korean T-50 Golden Eagle aircraft, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) in collaboration with Lockheed Martin. The T-50 Golden Eagle is the first South Korean supersonic training aircraft and light combat fighter. Its development began in the late 1990s, with the first flight occurring in 2002. It entered service with the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) in 2005.
The FA-50 is an advanced version of the T-50, featuring a larger internal fuel capacity, improved avionics, a longer radar, and a tactical datalink. It is equipped with a modified Israeli EL/M-2032 pulse-Doppler radar with Korean modifications. The FA-50 is capable of carrying a variety of weapons, including AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles and AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missiles.
Service and usage:
The FA-50PH is used by the Philippine Air Force, which ordered 12 units of this model. These aircraft were delivered by 2017 and have since been actively used in combat operations, including missions against terrorist groups in the Philippines. The FA-50PH has participated in numerous operations, including strikes on ground targets and air support missions.
International interest:
The FA-50 enjoys significant international interest. In addition to the Philippines, these aircraft have been ordered by countries such as Iraq, which received 24 units in 2016, and Poland, which ordered 48 FA-50 aircraft in 2022. Malaysia also decided to purchase 18 units of the latest Block 20 variant in 2023.
