Plastic model kit: Kawanishi N1K1-Ja Shiden (George) Type 11 Koh 1:48 Hasegawa JT89
The Kawanishi N1K1-Ja Shiden (Allied code name George) is one of the most interesting Japanese fighter aircraft from World War II. This design is directly derived from the N1K1 Kyofu floatplane fighter, which influenced its characteristic silhouette. The Shiden was the Imperial Japanese Navy's response to the need for a heavily armed land-based interceptor fighter.
The N1K1-Ja Type 11 Koh version was officially adopted for service in November 1944. The aircraft was characterized by powerful armament consisting of four 20 mm cannons. Although the machine suffered from technical problems, such as the complex, two-stage landing gear (resulting from the mid-wing layout adapted from the floatplane) and the unreliability of the Homare engine, in the hands of experienced pilots, it posed a deadly threat to American Hellcats and Corsairs due to its maneuverability and automatic combat flaps.
